Nationaal Monument Oranjehotel

Museum Panorama Mesdag

The Oranjehotel was the nickname for the Scheveningen prison during the Second World War. Since 2019, it has been a memorial centre as well as a museum. Over 25,000 people were imprisoned here for interrogation and trial between 1940 and 1945. They were arrested for acts that the German occupiers viewed as criminal. Resistance fighters, but also Jews, communists, Jehovah’s Witnesses and black marketeers were among their number. Even during the war, the complex was called Oranjehotel as a tribute to the Resistance members imprisoned there. The Nationaal Monument Oranjehotel aims to show a broad public how fragile freedom is by giving them the opportunity to learn about what happened in the Second World War in the Netherlands, and specifically in the ‘Oranjehotel’ during and shortly after the war.
