Sovjet Ereveld Experience
- Utrecht
865 war victims from the former Soviet Union are buried at the Soviet War Cemetery in Leusden. They had been captured on the Eastern Front and came from Soviet republics in Central Asia, mainly Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. In the Dutch Camp in Amersfoort, they were treated so badly that many died. The remaining soldiers were executed in 1942. At the Soviet Military Cemetery Experience, you will learn about the forgotten stories of these Soviet soldiers. Who were they, where did they come from, and what did their disappearance mean for the people they had to leave behind?
The heart of the experience consists of an immersive film and a unique virtual reality experience. During the film, you get to see through the eyes of the young boy Dmitri, who watches his father leave for the front – a loss that will characterise his entire life. Using the VR headset, you can then step into the shoes of his father, Vladimir Botenko. You travel from the battlefield to German captivity and the darkness of a coal mine.
